HO CHI MIN CITY
Wayan
drove us back the the airport for our Indonesia Air Asia flight back to
Singapore. We stayed one night in the hostel we have always used
when staying in Singapore. Early the next morning we were up to catch a taxi back to the airport where we were going to fly to Ho Chi Min CIity (the old Saigon) with David and Sam. We used another of the discount airlines, Jetstar Pacific.

The Cinnammon Hotel
We
stayed at the Cinnamon Hotel in the centre of the city. Note how tall
and thin the building is, presumable because taxes are based on the size
of the footprint. Also look at the tangle of electrical wires.
We spent the balance of the day walking around the city. We started out at the Ben
Thanh Market, rated as one to the major tourist attractions. When you
are there it is obvious why this is the case. It is very large and has
every imaginable item for sale, with many merchants eager for your
money.

The city is a mixture of old colonial buildings and very modern towers.

This is the Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception. All the materials were directly imported from France like the red bricks of the outside walls. There was a wedding in progress
Another well known tourist attraction is the Central Post Office which is one of the oldest buildings in Ho Chi Minh
City. It was built around 1886 – 1891, based on the design of Gustave
Eiffel.

Afternoon tea break
Our evening meal was at Cyclo Resto, near the hotel, which
served
an excellent and very reasonably priced Vietnamese meal. Service was
efficient and the set meal arrived almost immediately. The restaurant
was down a narrow alley, hard to find. Notable were the walls that were
covered in customers' writing, praising the food and everything else.
There were a number of drawn Canadian flags. We had a good evening
there.
